All in Sports Fantasy Advice
Week 9 - Football Breakdown and Rankings

Halloween is over which means it’s about that time for two things. First, Christmas themed everything and second, time to evaluate your team and plan for the playoffs (or next year). You don’t want to be the one who waffles in the middle as you’ll likely lose out on both ends.

I’m going to give you a few targets and things to look for when planning for playoff time. First, let me show you why it’s the worst situation to simply sit in the middle.

So back to Halloween, I had a potential party to attend. I’m not the biggest Halloween fan – buying something to wear that I won’t ever use again just to hang out somewhere I usually do anyway. Well, I waffled on attending said party all week while a particular friend tried to coax me to go. My niece is only three and no matter what, I was spending time with her so I thought it would be a moot issue.

Well, my sister/niece happen to live on the way from my friends’ place and where the party was. So, my buddy called to say he’d pick me up on the way, and I said okay. As you probably guessed, I had no costume. I simply wore the casual clothes I had on from trick-or-treating with Jordan (my niece). Wouldn’t you know it I was the one that felt like an idiot not being dressed in something…not the people in crazy (some really weird) costumes. Every look I caught, I assumed it was a thought of “way to be ‘that guy’” or “what do you think you’re too cool?” That latter thought ticks me off because I loathe the attitude of thinking you’re too cool (for school).

So, in the end, because I waffled and played the middle ground of going or not, I felt like a moron. I should have went all-in or not at all. At least that way I would have made a true decision.

That is what you need to do now. Don’t just try and make the playoffs and/or hope for a good record. Go for broke or look to next year. So how do you go for it all this year? Well, let’s look at some teams where you should target players as the trade deadline nears.

As bad as Jacksonville and New England have been against the pass, neither give up the most points-per-game to opposing QBs. The Texans actually do. Take a look at their Fantasy playoff schedule (Weeks 14-16). They face Baltimore, Tennessee and Denver. Baltimore also faces Cleveland who is ninth in QB PPG. That tells you to go after Joe Flacco. He’s lost some of his preseason luster, but he could help you out come the most important time. Buffalo also has a nice playoff run with games against Cleveland and New England, so Fitzpatrick has a good chance to be valuable all the way to the end. One other QB you may not think to have at your back for the playoffs is Donovan McNabb. The Redskins get Dallas in Week 15 and Jacksonville in Week 16 – exactly when you need the numbers. If he doesn’t lose his job, McNabb could be a sneaky play at the end.

Looking at running backs, Denver has all three weeks against teams in the top (bottom) 10 for allowing the most PPG (@ARZ, @OAK, HOU). If Knowshon Moreno can stay healthy, he can carry your team to a potential championship. Oakland also benefits from three games against teams in that same group (@JAX, DEN, IND). You probably can’t trade for Darren McFadden right now, but he has a few tough weeks coming up so keep an eye on him to buy low at the deadline, or even grab Michael Bush and hope for another DMC injury. Lastly, if either the Chris Johnson or Maurice Jones-Drew owners are low on their guys, grab either one as both have favorable running matchups.

At wide receiver, there a good amount of choices to target. Washington has all three games against teams with high allowed PPG’s for WRs (TB, @DAL, @JAX). If you can, go for Santana Moss, but that might be about it since the rest in Washington are inconsistent. Denver also has three games against poor teams (@ARZ, @OAK, HOU) so target those receivers. Although, remember they are risks after Brandon Lloyd given the inconsistency of who sees the most targets. Teams with two matchups in the top 10 of PPG allowed for WRs are Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis and Oakland. Most of those teams have studs that may be tough to pry away, but if you can grab Anquan Boldin, Dez Bryant, Pierre Garcon and maybe even Darrius Heyward-Bay (ugh!), give it a shot. (I’m assuming Miles Austin and Reggie Wayne would be untouchable – but if not, go for it!)

So there you go. It’s a nice snapshot of some ways you can plan ahead and go for it all this year. If you are already out of it, apologies. I will try to have something for you soon too.

Settling Up Week 8

Top Pair (players who guaranteed a good week)

Matthew Stafford

The guy can’t stay healthy, but when he is, Matthew Stafford can put up big numbers. The Lions offense is one of the most improved in the league, and Stafford’s return was a welcomed sight. We knew if Shaun Hill could do well, then Stafford would easily look good. In his first game back he threw four touchdowns, only one interception, and that was with his still looking a bit rusty. He could find himself as a QB1 before long.

Jamaal Charles

Who is the most explosive player in football? Chris Johnson you say? Well, Jamaal Charles would like to challenge that. When Charles has the ball, good things happen. He rushed for 177 yards and tossed in 61 yards on four receptions. It doesn’t matter that Todd Haley keeps the backfield in a timeshare situation. Charles is a legitimate RB1 no matter what.

Calvin Johnson

It was the perfect setup, Megatron playing on Halloween, and boy did he deliver. Calvin Johnson “transformed” his nine catches into 101 yards and three TDs. And, I do mean transformed. Johnson carried defenders for extra yards and even stretched his body only the way a Transformer could to get one of his TDs. Johnson is making a serious case to pass the “other” Johnson (Andre) for best WR in the game.

River Rat (players who surprised everyone)

David Garrard

What do you know…another player who had a questionable status (this time due to injuries) who blew up for a big game. Previously, we saw Braylon Edwards and Kenny Britt do the same with concerns of playing time due to suspensions. Now, David Garrard goes off admist concerns of if he could make it through the whole game because of a concussion. 260 yards and four TDs for Garrard led all scorers this week, and at the same time it shows just how bad the Cowboys have become.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis

One of the most frustrating running back situations in the league is in the Patriots’ backfield. Every week it seems as there is a new lead rusher. BenJarvus Green-Ellis had four straight games with a touchdown, but if you take those away, he had point totals of 9, 7, 2 and 2 (standard leagues). That is why BJGE was a risky play, but for those who started him, it a good time to do so. He didn’t get many more carries than usual (17), but he ran for 117 yards and two TDs. Maybe Bill Belichick will use him as his main RB now…and maybe Belichick will actually give a truthful injury report – basically, fat chance.

LeGarrette Blount

It was coming. If only LeGarrette Blount could be given a puncher’s chance (sorry, had to) at taking over the Bucs’ backfield, he could succeed. It is now apparent that is accurate. With 22 attempts, Blount pounded (had to again) the Arizona defense for 120 yards and two TDs. Cadillac Williams time as the main running back in Tampa Bay is officially over.

Mike Sims-Walker

I don't even really want to discuss him. Put it this way, if you're an owner - you know every once of frustration that comes with him. If you aren't, just be happy.

Gut Shot (player(s) who let everyone down)

Aaron Rodgers

It is well known that the Jets have one of the best defenses, and especially pass defenses, in the league. Aaron Rodgers is supposed to be able to overcome opponents like these. He is an elite quarterback after all. Too bad he didn’t this week as he let a lot of owners down. For the first time this year, he didn’t throw a touchdown and only put up 170 yards. That hurts especially when many owners drafted him in the first round.

Side Note: I cautioned many, many owners about drafting Rodgers or Drew Brees in the first round this year. The argument was, “but they are head and shoulders above the rest.” I continually pointed out the inconsistency year after year of top QBs, and that RBs and WRs are much more valuable early in drafts. Plus, look at the QB standings (average per game since bye weeks aren’t finished): Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Kyle Orton, THEN Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. Manning’s ADP was round two, Rivers in round four, and Orton was mostly undrafted. I’m not trying to toot my own horn, just trying to prove the point so next year owners don’t make the mistake of taking a QB in the first round again.

Ben Roethlisberger

Big Ben came out firing after the suspension but the Saints squelched that blaze. Roethlisberger did not throw for a single TD on his way to just 195 yards and an interception. Needless to say, many owners were left out to dry after that (okay enough with the elemental descriptions).

Steven Jackson

Jackson has been a workhorse and given solid numbers every game after Week 1. That was until last week. Against a soft Carolina team, SJax only managed 59 yards on 23 carries. Needless to say it was his most disappointing performance of the year.

Brandon Marshall

Oh 2009 Brandon Marshall, where have you gone. Maybe it’s part of the fact I pointed out a good portion of his 2009 numbers came from two games? Still, we expected more. Now the Dolphins face Baltimore and Marshall has a real chance to have a third strsight week with single-digit Fnatasy points.

All In or Muck Em? (Hot or Not)

All In (Hot)

Peyton Manning

Another week, another multiple-TD game for Manning. That one off week against the Chiefs is already forgotten as he’s making a serious case for another MVP award.

Philip Rivers

Rivers worst week on the year was still a double-digit performance. He is also on pace to break Dan Marino’s single-season passing yards record. Did I point out he was the sixth or seventh drafted QB on average…value!

Adrian Peterson

Honestly, the only concern with Peterson at this point is wear and tear. He is averaging 23.5 carries a game, is on pace for 377 total, and has even caught 22 passes so far. Toby Gerhart better start getting some more chances simply to preserve AP for this year (and next – curse of 370).

Arian Foster

Okay, so he didn’t bulldoze the Colts for 200-plus yards and over 40 Fantasy points, but Arian Foster is still the top scoring RB on the year. That is even with a 25-yard performance against the Giants. He clearly gets the “came out of nowhere” award for 2010.

Darren McFadden

It’s no surprise that this is the case, but the only thing that will hold DMC back is an injury. It is surprising just how good he’s been as both the Raiders and owners have been waiting since he was drafted in 2008 for this to happen. That said, he is a clear RB1 but will always be worrisome as the next injury always seems to be around the corner.

Calvin Johnson

Speaking of injury prone, Calvin Johnson might put forth too much effort at times. Every time you turn around he’s hurt his shoulder, or tweaked an ankle, or has a sore knee. He is clearly one of the most talented WRs in the league, and hopefully Stafford can become more accurate to keep Johnson’s body from extreme contact.

Terrell Owens

Every time we are ready to cast aside Owens, he bounces back. He came into Cincinnati to compliment Chad Ochocinco on the field. However, he has taken the spotlight and the bulk of catches and TDs. Owens is fifth in scoring for receivers on the year, and he doesn’t look like he’ll be given up his share to Ocho at any time.

Andre Johnson

Here’s hoping you bought low on Andre Johnson while you had the chance. His ankle was a concern, but with back-to-back weeks with over 100 yards and a touchdown those concerns are gone. As mentioned, Johnson and Johnson (not the brand) will battle it out for the rest of the year as the league’s best WR.

Antonio Gates

Gates = superstar. The end.

Jason Witten

Witten may be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Jon Kitna replacing Tony Romo. He has two straight game of nine or more receptions, 90-plus yards and a TD. He has reclaimed his spot amongst the top-end TE options.

Muck Em (Not)

Chad Henne

Henne was expected to take the next step this year, but he just can’t seem to take it. His decision making has not improved enough to elevate him to every-week starter, and actually, he is only a fill-in based on matchups right now. While his yardage projection is respectable (over 3,600), he is on pace for only 18 TDs to go with 16 interceptions.

Mark Sanchez

Maybe now everyone will jump off the Sanchez bandwagon. It is taking longer than it should which shows how much people can buy into hype. Then again, the Jets face the Lions this week. With how poor Detroit plays the pass, Sanchez could be in line for a good game which will make people forget about his three consecutive poor ones. Don’t be one of those people.

Jahvid Best

It’s misleading, but Best is still in the top 15 for scoring at the RB position. Take that tidbit and try to trade him for good value. He hasn’t scored since Week 2 and has five straight games with single-digit point totals.

Cedric Benson

Would Benson build off 2009 or revert to his Chicago days was the big question heading into the year. He ended up falling somewhere in between, maybe a bit more towards the Chicago side. He only has two double-digit games and one with over 100 yards rushing. If he can put up some big numbers one week, try to sell him off at high value.

Randy Moss

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or don’t pay attention to Fantasy Football, I don’t need to explain this. Actually, if you are one of the latter, what are you doing here anyway?

Roy Williams

Another perfect example of sell high while you can, Williams has fallen right back down to expectant levels of performance. With Kitna at the helm, don’t expect Williams to return to any type of consistent play.

Chad Ochocinco

With Owens taking over, someone had to suffer. Unfortunately for Mr. 8-5, he has taken the biggest hit. He does have two monster games on the year, but in the rest he put up five Fantasy points or less.

Aaron Hernandez

The performance simply doesn’t match the hype. Hernandez seems to get over-promoted as do many Patriots these days. Granted, he has been consistent, and in a PPR league has more value. But the fact remains he has zero touchdowns and only one week with double-digit points.

What’s the Deal for Week 9?

Ace in the Hole (players who will increase your odds of winning)

Philip Rivers

The yardage total he’s on pace for speaks for itself. A matchup against Houston who gives up the most Fantasy points to opposing QBs, well things couldn’t look any better.

Aaron Rodgers

It’s Rodgers turn to face the hapless Dallas defense. This is the perfect setup for a huge bounce-back week.

Matt Ryan

Know who has two thumbs, is sixth in scoring for QBs, has a TD pass every week since Week 2, and will have another good week against Tampa Bay? This (that) guy!

Michael Turner

Turner went into the bye-week with a bang, and look for him to come back out with another one. Atlanta should have a good day all around against the Bucs.

Darren McFadden

Word of warning, I’ve had a touch of the injury curse on my hands so even though DMC will continue his streak of good performances, I may have just jinxed the guy.

LeSean McCoy

McCoy slowed down a bit heading into the Eagles bye-week. A matchup against the Colts is a nice way to wake him up. Plus, his rib injury should be mostly behind him, so expect good things.

Roddy White

Did I mention the Falcons should beat up on the Bucs? I did. Well, then watch it be a 9 to 6 game. Nah, the Atlanta offense is too good as is Mr. WR Fantasy MVP, Roddy White.

Greg Jennings

Three games in a row with six catches and two touchdowns in that span. Yea, Jennings is back and like I mentioned with Rodgers, the Cowboys defense is a welcomed sight.

Miles Austin

“Austin is struggling, he will get even worse with Kitna at QB…” Yea, what was that? Austin is an elite level WR and proved it yet again last week. Stop doubting the guy.

Dustin Keller

He’s Sanchez’s favorite target a good portion of the time, and the Jets face Detroit this week. If he can’t put up solid numbers against the Lions, it may be time to consider his earlier success a flash in the pan.

The Flop (players who will let you down)

Matthew Stafford

Don’t expect another four-TD performance from Stafford this week. Look at what the Jets did to Rodgers. The Lions still might find a way to have Calvin Johnson score, but look elsewhere for your QB.

Carson Palmer

And the roller coaster ride continues. This has the makings for one of the low weeks for Palmer. The Pittsburgh defense will make this a horror-house ride and not a fun one.

Chad Henne

Even though Baltimore’s defense, especially in the passing game, it not what it once was, it’s still imposing enough to make mediocre QBs like Henne a poor choice.

Cedric Benson

Already pointed this out in the Muck ‘Em portion, and a game against the Steelers will not help matters.

Jahvid Best

See Benson, Cedric and the Jets on tap.

Marshawn Lynch

Last week’s stinker for Lynch should tell you he hasn’t regained his RB1 status in Seattle, and the Giants are not about to allow it to return this week.

Chad Ochocinco

Another player already touched on as is his matchup. Hope for better things after Pittsburgh leaves town.

Percy Harvin

One of the players who will be hurt the most by Randy Moss leaving. We already saw early on he cannot handle being the No. 1 option. Harvin needs Rice just like San Francisco does (albeit a different kind).

Nate Burleson

The only, ONLY player that you should play against the Jets defense is Calvin Johnson. Burleson could be ignored and accidentally find himself scoring a touchdown, but then again, the Lions defense could play like the Steelers this week. Basically, don’t expect either.

Brent Celek

Indianapolis allows the least amount of PPG for opposing TEs. Plus, Michael Vick is back. When you add those two things together, you have a TE option I’m avoiding…could be selling him too low, but I just don’t like it.

Playing the Odds (Pickups and Drops)

The Turn (players who will help you soon, grab if you can)

S = Starter (QB2/RB2/WR2 or higher)

F = QB3/RB3/WR3, Flex worthy

WR: Steve Breaston (F), Mike Williams – TB (F), Davone Bess (B – flex play in PPR), Anthony Gonzalez (B with big potential if can take No. 3 role back), James Jones (B), Lance Moore (F – caution, any given week he could put up a stinker…I am not a fan of Saints or Broncos receivers)

TE: Owen Daniels (S – low end for now), Jacob Tamme (F – already on verge of starter status), Heath Miller (F), Ben Watson (F)

Bluffed (players who thought would help, but won’t so fold them)
