Updated Pre-Season Rankings 2010

I’m that guy. Yup, I’m the one who you don’t know from Adam, who jumps into your conversation with your buddy to correct your sports related mistake. The one who makes you look stupid in front of your buddy because you said the Panthers lost Super Bowl XL (it was the Seahawks by the way). There is a reason for that. It’s because something has to be done, and I won’t let it stand anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the Schwab. I don’t know every statistical fact or every winner and loser of each sports’ championships. However, I am quite knowledgeable and know enough to handle my own.

There is nothing wrong with not knowing who the MVP of the World Series was in 1974 (Rollie Fingers). My problem is when people like this spout off incorrect tidbits as if they were factual. Then, the other people in the conversation (if they don’t know better) are now a part of this misinformation.

Think about that, next time they are in a conversation about that same topic, there are only two possible outcomes. One, the person repeats the incorrect information and looks foolish as he’s corrected (and probably mocked) by his friends. Or two, he passes on the false info to more people who then repeat the process. This is irresponsible and why I am putting a stop to it where I can.

The problem is genetics – how men are built (women, feel free to skip this part…who am I kidding, none read this). We are wired to try to be the alpha male. One of the ways we show that is by sports and competition. When you take it off the field to discussions, the knowledge of such things can substitute. Men get that sense of winning and pride when they know more about sports than others. Therefore, even if we are iffy on a topic, we’ll rattle of a story or pieces of info until we are corrected.

So, next time you are at a baseball game and a father is telling his son that Ubaldo Jiminez is the best rookie in the game (4-year vet), or a guy on a plane is saying Quincy can lead the Browns now that he’s been traded there (Brady QUINN, who was traded again to Denver) correct them! Who cares if you are “that guy”? You are doing the responsible thing and saving the friend from embarrassment or from the spread of misinformation.

Hmmm, guess I should tie this into fantasy football and rankings, or it’s just a rant. Well, do your work/research. Know which players are on which teams and look at the depth charts. At least prepare yourself for draft day with some solid information before you try to draft Terrell Owens of the Bills (hoping you all know he is in Cincinnati now). Otherwise, I hope your buddies mock you incessantly because you deserve it.
